My Irlens Syndrome Story

Besides Cerebral Palsy, I have Irlens syndrome. I know you are probably wondering what on earth Irlens syndrome is. Well I'm going to be honest with you, I don't know exactly the details of the condition but I will put more details in my Irlens explained section once I have done more research into it. For now I will only talk about my experiences with Irlens syndrome.

Unlike Cerebral Palsy I was not diagnosed with Irlens syndrome from birth even though it stems from birth and in some cases can be genetic because my mum has it too but we were both only diagnosed within the last year. Basically, Irlens syndrome is a condition is affects how a person may see the world. The condition affects my reading and spatial awareness (basically means that I struggle judging distances and my balance as I used to always struggled ) and it also makes me sensitive light. However now that I have special tinted glasses that stops these problems from occurring. It was also only identified and diagnosed when I had my disability assessment for Student Finance so I could have support at university because I originally put my extreme tiredness down to my Cerebral Palsy not a whole other condition.

Me wearing my special glasses  (or Ozzy Osbourne glasses as my brother calls them) at Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio Tour.

My tints are my new lifeline that I will never forget, break or even lose. My tints have given me so much in such a little package. I am no longer tired; I can do so much more and a lot less wobbling on escalators like I always have done. I am more active. It has made me happier because I am no longer frustrated that I can’t do everything that I wanted to. I also now have lots of knowledge because I now can see the words. I am no longer having headaches, feeling sick or dizzy. It has given me more confidence with my work for university. The glasses have allowed me to do more things other than just studying for my degree like it did before. It has allowed me to write the stories that I have been dreaming up for years but I have been too tired to write them down.  I am also getting better at driving that I am close to pass my theory and practical tests. So excited. The glasses have given the new lease of life. Anything’s possible, even more so than before.
